Last Action Hero is a horizontally scrolling multi-directional action adventure game based on the 1993 movie. The game was developed and released on various platforms such as Nintendo NES, Nintendo SNES, Sega Megadrive/Genesis, Nintendo Game Boy, Sega Game Gear and PC (MS-DOS), Commodore Amiga, but from different software houses (Sony Imagesoft and Psygnosis) and development teams (Teeny Weeny Games, Bits Studios, Dome Software Developments etc). The Game Gear version was developed from Bits Studios, and published by Sony.

Review
Last Action HeroAs movie hero Jack Slater, you'll team up with your biggest fan, Danny Madigan, who's got a magic movie ticket that's the ticket to serious trouble. Leaping between both the movie world and the real world with this magic ticket, you'll get into wild chases and deadly fights with the most dangerous criminals imaginable.
Gameplay has a strict time limit to defeat each level of the game. Using your fists and kicks can defeat enemies, but those are mostly equipped with guns and grenades too! Thus you must go really close to them in order to defeat them! The only way to defeat them is to duck every time they shoot (or jump over the grenades before explosion) and slowly approach them in a distance enough to punch or kick them! This tends to be very frustrating most of the times as you may easily lose your precious energy. Not only that, but you may easily fall into deadly pits or high heights and loose a life instantly too. Oh yes, controls are a bit awkward and it's too easy to miss the appropriate distance when jumping between platforms, falling into previous places in the stage, and start over again climbing.
Arnold holds an extinguisher to put out fire that blocks your entrance in certain places in each stage. No clue why this happens during gameplay, really. It's nothing to worry about, the fire is there, you just have to go close and hit the Button B to put out the fire and proceed.
Most of this game takes place in large buildings where Arnie has to fight his way up to fight a nondescript boss character. That's pretty much it. The game tries to bring the movie's story into a somewhat condensed form into the video game, and to its credit, it sort of achieves this but there is nothing really special here in terms of gameplay, rather than a title based on a famous film. But it's difficulty due to the awkward controls, makes it quite frustrating and maybe not worthy. Note that only the Amiga and SNES versions offer two stages with car chase.

Although its basic gameplay, and it's frustrating controls, graphics look pretty good. Backgrounds are beautifully detailed whilst sprites move fast and being nicely animated.
Sound is also good offering some in-game tunes but no SFX which is rather awkward for a Game Gear title.
